How to Measure Belt Size (Fits Your Pants Right)

To learn how to measure belt size, use either method below: measure an existing belt from the buckle fold to your used hole, or take your pant waist size and add 2 inches (for example, a 34" pant waist wears a 36" belt).

Two Ways to Find Your Belt Size

Method 1 • Existing Belt

3 Common Belt Sizing Mistakes

Measuring Tip-to-Tip (Total Length)

Never measure tip-to-tip total strap length—belts have 5" to 7" of extra leather past the holes (total strap length is typically Pant Size + 6" to 8"). Always measure strictly from the buckle fold (A) to the hole you use (B).

Buying Your Exact Pant Size

Your belt wraps outside your pants waistband. Buying a 34" belt for a 34" waist will be too tight—always add 2 inches.

Including the Metal Buckle

Starting at the outer edge of the metal buckle adds 1.5" to 2" of false length. Always start at the leather fold (A).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure belt size?

There are two ways. Measure your current belt from the point where the leather meets the buckle (the fold) to the hole you use most. Or take your pants size and add 2 inches, because belts are sized about 2 inches larger than the pants waist.

What belt size do I need for my pants size?

Add 2 inches to your pants waist size. For example, 32 inch pants need a size 34 belt, and 34 inch pants need a size 36 belt. Your belt should close on the middle hole.

Does belt size include the buckle?

No. Belt size is measured from the end of the leather where it attaches to the buckle to the center hole, not including the buckle itself.

How do I measure belt size in cm?

Measure in inches and multiply by 2.54. For example, a 36 inch belt is about 91 cm. Some European belts are labeled by waist in cm, so compare with the maker's chart.

How do I measure belt size for men and women?

The method is the same. Measure your waist where the belt will sit, or use your pants size plus 2 inches. Women's belts are often sold in S, M and L, so check the waist range printed on the size chart.

What if I am between belt sizes?

Choose the larger size. A belt that is slightly long can still fasten on a smaller hole, while a belt that is too short will not fit.
