Outseam is the full length of the outer side of the pants, measured from the top of the waistband down the side seam to the bottom of the hem. It is always longer than the inseam.

Lay the garment flat and measure from the top of the waistband along the side seam to the bottom of the hem. On your body, measure from your natural waist (where the waistband sits) along the outside of the leg down to where you want the hem to end.

Outseam is roughly the inseam plus the front rise. With a typical rise of about 9 to 12 inches, a 32 inch inseam usually means an outseam of roughly 41 to 44 inches. Check the product's size chart for the exact figure.

Around 31 to 32 inches for most fits, using the rule of thumb that inseam is about 45% of height. Fit style and how much break you like can move this by an inch or so.

A 5'9" person usually lands around 30 to 32 inches. A 30 works if you like a shorter, no-break or ankle-length look, while 32 gives a fuller break over shoes. Try the height matcher in the calculator above.

Inseam runs along the inner leg (see our inseam guide), outseam runs along the outer leg from the waistband, and rise is the distance from the crotch seam up to the waistband. Outseam is approximately inseam plus rise.
